What is the gospel?

Good news worth believing

God created the world good and made us for relationship with him (Genesis 1:31; 2:7). Yet all of us have chosen our own way, and that rebellion has brought brokenness into our hearts, families, and world (Romans 3:23). Sin separates us from God and leads to death, not only physically but spiritually (Romans 6:23).

God’s rescue plan

Because God is loving and just, he did not leave us in our brokenness (John 3:16). He sent Jesus Christ, fully God and fully man, to live the life we could not live and to die the death we deserved (2 Corinthians 5:21). On the cross, Jesus took the penalty for our sin, and through his resurrection, he defeated sin and death once and for all (1 Corinthians 15:3–4).

Our response

The gospel calls for a response, not religious effort or self-improvement (Ephesians 2:8–9). God invites us to repent, turning from sin, and to believe, trusting Jesus alone as Savior and Lord (Mark 1:15; Romans 10:9). When we do, God forgives our sin, gives us new life, and restores us to a right relationship with him (2 Corinthians 5:17).

A new life begins

Following Jesus does not remove all hardship, but it does give us new purpose, hope, and power through the Holy Spirit (John 10:10; Galatians 2:20). We are brought into God’s family and sent to live lives of obedience, love, and mission for his glory (Matthew 28:19–20). This is the life we were created for.
